Thinking about the previous posting I wanted to show you this video. Among many others I used to listen to this song in my record player in the late 80s. Do you still remember this?

The Runaways (2010)

The Runaways sai ensi-iltansa alueellamme noin viikko sitten. Suomen ensi-iltaan leffa tulee syyskuussa 2010. Elokuva perustuu tositapahtumiin ja kertoo Joan Jettin uran alkuvuosista, 70-luvun tyttöbändissä The Runaways. Pääosissa tässä naisenergiaa uhkuvassa elokuvassa ovat Kristen Stewart ja Dakota Fanning.

The Runaways had its opening in our area about a week ago. This movie will have its premiere in Finland in September, 2010. This movie is a story about the early years of Joan Jett's career. A true story of the 70s girl band, The Runaways. In the leading roles you will see young actresses Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.

Stewart ja Fanning (Joan Jett ja Cherie Currie) nuo kaksi nuorta näyttelijärtä loistavat kyllä rooleissaan, mutta yhä edelleen olen aistivinani heissä pientä haparointia ja kömpelyyttä (tai ehkä tämä oli tahallista, roolihahmoihin liittyvää sellaista). Kristenhän palkittiin tänä vuonna nouseva tähti BAFTA-pystillä, mutta jostain syystä en ole edelleenkään lämmennyt hänen kohdallaan. Twilight-saagassa hän vaikuttaa roolissaan hiukan kankealta ja samaa olen aistivinani tässäkin roolissa. Mutta nuoriahan nämä molemmat neidot kyllä ovat, joten kehitystä varmasti tapahtuu koko ajan.

Stewart and Fanning (Joan Jett and Cherie Currie), those two young actresses were shining in their roles, but I was still sensing some fumbling and hesitation in their characters (or maybe this was intentional, a part of their characters). Kristen was awarded with Rising Star-award at the BAFTA-gala this year, but I haven't yet warmed up for her. In Twilight saga she seems a bit stiff in her role and I am sensing the same problem in this role also. But both these women are still very young and will get better by time, for sure.


Itse elokuvasta henkii todella hyvin 70-lukua leveine lahkeineen, hiustyyleineen ja lavasteineen. Myös kuvaustyylistä aistii varhaisen 70-luvun, sillä kuva on ajoittain rakeinen ja hiukan epätarkka, lähes kellastunut. Aloittelevan tyttöbändin elämäntyyli, haasteet ja paheet tulevat leffasta hyvin julki. Kaikki ei toki käynyt kädenkäänteessä ja levy-yhtiön tiloissa poseeraamiseen meni oma aikansa. Nuorten, aloittelevien muusikko-tyttösten elämään kuului ikävä kyllä rock-piireissä jo hyvin varhain huumeet, lääkkeet ja alkoholi. Elämä saattoi olla yhtä sekoilua, itsensä uudelleen kokoamista ja sekoilua.

Mutta siinä missä Cherie Currie joutui miettimään omia valintojaan, Joan Jettillä oli selvä päämäärä, hänelle musiikki oli koko elämä ja The Runaways oli vain alkusoittoa tulevalle.

The movie reflects the 70s in a believable way with the wide legged jeans, hair style and sceneries. Also the way the movie was filmed brought the seventies atmosphere alive. The film was a bit grainy, at times unfocused and almost yellowish. The way these young rocker chicks lived their lives is also shown well here and the path was not easy to get to pose at the record company's table. The life of a young and rising rock star was also and unfortunately often filled with drugs and booze. It was often about messing up, getting yourself together and messing up again.

But while Cherie Currie had to think about her choices, Joan Jett knew what she wanted. Music was her life and The Runaways was only the beginning for her.

Minulle tästä kokoonpanosta erityisen tuttuja kasvoja ovat Joan Jett ja Lita Ford. 80-luvulla levysoittimessani soi usein Joan Jettin I love Rock n Roll, mutta Lita Ford oli 80-luvun lopulla ja 90-luvun alussa tälle heavy-rockia kuuntelevalle teinille tosi kova nimi. Hän oli hyvä laulaja, mutta sen lisäksi hän on myös todella hyvä kitaristi, päihittäen monet miescollegansakin.

From this group names like Joan Jett (of course) and Lita Ford are very familiar to me. When I was a teenager in the 80s I often played Joan Jett's song I love Rock n Roll in my record player. But especially Lita Ford was the name for me. Being this heavy-rock girl in the late 80s and early 90s, Lita Fords music offered me a lot! She was not only a good singer, but also a fantastic guitar player, beating many of his male colleagues.

A Single Man (2009)

A Single Man on monella tapaa kiinnostava elokuva rakkaudesta, tapaturmaisesta menetyksestä, surusta, kaipuusta, ystävyydestä sekä uuden alun pienistä välkähdyksistä. Käyn seuraavassa läpi hiukan elokuvan tunnelmia, sen suuremmin itse juonta kuitenkaan paljastamatta.

A Single Man is an interesting movie in many ways. Is it a movie about love, accidental loss, sorrow, longing, friendship and that little hope of a new beginning. In the following I will go through the atmoshpere of this film without revealing the plot too much.

Colin Firth oli roolistaan Oscar-ehdokkaana, eikä suotta. Miten haastavaa on täytynyt olla uppoutua tähän rooliin. Tulkita rakkaansa menettäneen, elokuvan pääosassa olevan Georgen syvää ja ylitsepääsemätöntä surua 60-luvun Los Angelesissa. Firth suoriutui roolistaan tavalla, joka todella porautui mieleeni. Hän toi erinomaisella tavalla esille tuon miltei alkukantaisen tuskan ja raastavan epätoivon, jonka partnerin menetys aiheuttaa. Hän toi kauniisti esille myös sen, kuinka rakkaudella ei ole rajoja ja kuinka meillä kaikilla on oikeus rakastaa ja myös tässä tilanteessa syvästi surra kumppaniamme (seksuaaliseen suuntautumiseemme takertumatta).

Colin Firth was nominated for and Oscar for his role in this film and for a good reason. How difficult it must have been to dive into this role, being in the leading role, acting as a middle aged man called George, who lost the love of his life in the Los Angeles suburbans in the 60s and left behind feeling all that deep and unmanagable pain. He was so remarkable in his role that it really hit me. He brought alive that almost primitive pain and harrowing despair, which the loss of ones partner causes. He also showed how love doesn't have boundaries, and how all of us have the right to love and also in this situation to mourn our companion (not getting caught to our sexual orientation).

Georgen henkinen ahdistus ja syvä tuska oli käsinkosketeltavissa läpi elokuvan. Nuo kaikki piinaavat unet, kaipuu ja hidastus-tehosteet, kellon tikitys, ajassa pysähtyminen. Elokuvassa oli myös kikkailtu filmin herkkyydellä ja kohtaukset olivat ajoittain melko rakeisia, tuoden oman lisäfiiliksensä tälle leffalle.

George's emotional anxiety and deep pain was tangible during the whole movie. All those quiet moments, haunting dreams, longing and slow motion effects, ticking of the clock, pauses in time. And in this movie you could also see the graininess of the film which also was a very good trick I think. It added the feel to this film.



Georgen tukena kaikessa surussa oli pitkäaikainen ystävä ja naapurinsa Charley (Julianne Moore). Näiden kahden välillä oli syvää, miltei sanoja tarvitsematonta luottamusta ja ymmärrystä, mutta myös hitunen läheisyyden kaipuuta, erityisesti Charleyn puolelta.

George had only his long time friend and neighbor Charley to comfort him. There was a lot of deep and almost this no words needing trust and understanding between these two, but also some longing, especially from Charley's side.



George kohtaa elokuvassa myös nuoren oppilaansa Kennyn (Nicholas Hoult), joka osoittaa lohduttavaa kiinnostusta itseään iäkkäämpää professoria kohtaan.

Elokuvan sanoma on hyvin melankolinen, ajoittain lähes masentavan surullinen. Mutta silti kaiken tuon tuskan keskeltä nousi hitaasti esille myös toivoa uudesta alusta ja uusista ihmisistä yhden elämänhalunsa menettäneen, surumielisen miehen elämässä.

Elokuva on muotisuunnittelijana tunnetuksi tulleen Tom Fordin esikoisohjaus. Tämän elokuvan jälkeen voi jo sanoa, että miehellä on edessä valoisa tulevaisuus myös loistavana ohjaajana! Erinomainen ohjaustyö, täytyy sanoa!

George meets a young student Kenny (Nicholas Hoult) in the story, and Kenny shows some comforting interest towards professor almost twice his age.

The message of this film is quite melancholic, at times almost depressingly sad. But still the viewer is able to point out some slow growing hope of new beginning and new people in one sad man's (who had lost his zest for life) life.

Tom Ford deputs as a director in this film and is previously known as a famous fashion designer. But after seeing this film I would defenitely say that he also has a future as a brilliant director! Excellent directing, I must say!

Jesse James Scandal?

Muistatte ehkä Sandra Bullockin Oscar-puheen, jossa hän viittasi mieheensä Jesse Jamesiin ja siihen, miltä tuntuu, kun on joku, joka on aina sinun takanasi.

You may still remember the speech Sandra Bullock gave at the Oscar Gala mentioning that it feels good to finally have someone there to have her back (meaning his husband Jesse James).

Ja minä katselin ihaillen tätä paria Oscar-illan kuvissa ja ajattelin, että mahtavaa, kun edelleen löytyy aviopareja, joiden liitot kestävät Hollywoodissa.

And I admired this couple when going through the Oscar Gala night photos thinking that Thank god there still are couples who can make it in the Hollywood Heat.

He vaikuttavat niin jalat maassa tyyppiseltä, tasapainoiselta avioparilta. Ja olen ihailllut, kuinka Sandra on ottanut Jessen lapsetkin siipiensä suojaan.

They always seem like this down to earth, balanced couple. And have to admit I've been admiring how willingly Sandra has taken Jesse's kids under her wings.

Mutta mitäs sitten tapahtuikaan...

Pari päivää sitten tämä nainen astui tabloideihin. Tattoo malli Michelle "Bombshell" McGee paljasti juorulehdille, että hänellä oli kuuma suhde Jesse Jamesin kanssa, kun rouva Sandra Bullock kuvasi elokuvaa The Blind Side.

Itse en aina tiedä, uskoako juorulehtiin vai ei, mutta nyt tämä uutinen on kaikkialla mediassa. Voi Sandra parkaa! Mutta erityisesti tässä nyt varmasti kärsivät Jesse Jamesin lapset. Vastahan Jesse sai taisteltua 6-vuotiaan tyttärensä huoltajuuden ex-vaimoltaan ja nyt tämä...

Kökkö juttu, ja toivon mukaan nämä syytökset lopulta paljastuvat pissitykseksi. Tosin Jamesin pahoitteluraportti ei nyt ihan heti viittaa siihen... Kuin ei myöskään se, että Sandra Bullock perui yllättäen The Blind Siden Lontoon ensi-iltansa ja sai tällä perumisellaan juorut varmasti vielä pahempaan pyöritykseen.

Aika näyttää, miten tälle avioparille lopulta käy...

But then what happened?

Couple of days ago this woman opened up to the tabloids. Tattoo model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee revealed that she and Mr. James had an affair while Sandra Bullock was shooting The Blind Side.

I myself don't always trust these magazines, but now this thing is all over the media. Poor Sandra! But most of all I feel bad for the kids. It was not long ago when Jesse James got the custody of his 6-year old daughter from his ex-wife and now this...

This is bad and I really hope that in the end all these accusations prove to be wrong! Even though Jesse James publicly apoloziged to his wife and children and this doesn't really imply that these allegations are pulled from nowhere. And also Sandra pulled out from her Blind Side London premiere, which makes people wonder even more that what was really going on.

Time will only tell what will happen to this couple...

Shutter Island (2010)

Rohkaisin itseni ja menin katsomaan sunnuntaina Shutter Islandin erään ystävättäreni kanssa.

My friend encouraged me to go see Shutter Island with her and I ended up doing that on Sunday.

Elokuva teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen. Niin visuaalisesti, tunnelmaltaan kuin ohjaustyöltään. Mutta ennen kaikkea Leonardo DiCaprio sävähdytti!

This movie impressed me. Visually, with it's atmosphere and the way it was directed. But most of all I was impressed by Leonardo DiCaprio!

Shutter Island on hämyinen ja pelottavan oloinen saari, jonne koko elokuvan kulku sijoittuu.

Shutter Island is this obscure and scary looking island, where the whole story is located.

Sain jo pienimuotoisia kananliha-oireita tästäkin, aivan elokuvan alkumetreille sijoittuvasta kohtauksesta. Naisesta, jonka DiCaprion roolihahmo Teddy kohtaa heti saarelle saavuttuaan. Tuo nainen noine utuisine silmineen vaikuttaa miltei riivatulta ja pelottavalta.

Martin Scorsese on osannut ohjatessaan luoda katsojan eteen hyvin mystisen ja karmaisevan ympäristön kaikkine roolihahmoineen, joka on kuin luotu tällaiselle elokuvalle. Elokuva kehittyy erittäin kiehtovalla tavalla ja minut leffa sai yllättymään, itse asiassa usemmankin kerran. Loppua kohden mentäessä en enää tiennyt, missä meni totuuden, unien tai jopa hallusinaatioiden raja, mitä uskoa ja mitä ei. Todella moniulotteinen ja ovelasti kuvioitu juoni, joka osoittaa Scorsesen kyvyt ohjaajana.

I already got goose bumps when looking at this scene at the very beginning of this film. This woman, whom DiCaprios character Teddy meets when he arrives to this mysterious island. This woman looks almost possessed and a bit creepy with her hazy eyes.

Martin Scorsese had made this mystic and spooky environment with all its characters in front of the viewer, which was like made for this kind of movie. The movie develops in a very challenging way and it gave me many suprises. When the movie started to reach the end I wasn't always able to say, where the truth was and where the dreams or even hallusinations started, what to believe and what not to believe. This movie is very complex and cunningly done and it shows how incredible Scorsese is as a director.

Leonardo DiCaprio on elokuvan pääosassa ja minä uppouduin hänen roolihahmoonsa niin lumoutuneena, että halusin loppuun saakka nähdä asiat hänen tavallaan. Ja niinkuin olen jo useammasta blogista saanut lukea ja niinkuin itsekin leffan aikana sain todeta, tämä on ehkä yksi DiCaprion uran suurimmista ja onnistuneimmista rooleista.

Leonardo DiCaprio was in the leading role in this film and I was so into his character that I wanted to see things his way until the very end. H is a capable and as many have already mentioned this is probably and by far one of the best roles he has ever played.

Myös Michelle Williams sai ihoni kananlihalle omassa roolissaan. Hän oli toisaalta hauras ja toisaalta pelottavan läpitunkevan oloinen nainen. Ihan hurjan hyvä roolisuoritus myös häneltä.

Michelle Williams was also remarkable in her role and got my skin once again on goose bumps. She was this fragile, yet this scary through piercing person and really, she is a very strong actress.

Elokuva oli myös visuaalisesti hiljentävää katseltavaa. Osa kohtauksista on melko voimakkaita ja naiskatsojille tämä elokuva voi osittain olla vaikeaakin katseltavaa, mutta jotain surullisen kaunista tässä elokuvassa siitä huolimatta on. Ja pitää myöntää, että tämä on ensimmäinen kerta, kun todella huomasin nauttivani tämänkaltaisesta, psykologisesta thrilleristä, jossa oli ihan aavistus kauhuleffoille tyypillistä otetta. Mutta ihan vain hitunen, eli kyllä tämän voi mennä katsomaan sellainenkin ihminen, joka kiertää kauhuleffat kaukaa. Eihän tätä leffaa ole edes kategorioitu kauhuleffaksi.

This movie was also visually stunning and breath taking. Some of the scenes were very graphic and strong and perhaps a little difficult to watch, especially for women, but there was something sadly beautiful inside this movie. And I have to admit that this was the first time I really enjoyd this kind of psychological thriller, which even had just a hint of horror genre in it. But just a little bit, so even if you are not a fan of horror movies, you can go and see this film. It is not even categorized as horror movie, actually.

Shutter Island oli todella vaikuttava ja olen miltei kokonaan myyty. Muutama elokuvan sisällöstä löytyvä yksityiskohta näin omasta (äidin) näkökulmastani katseltuna vaivasi minua kuitenkin leffaa katsellessani sen verran, etten voi ihan täyttä viittä tähteä tälle antaa, vaikka miltei mieli tekisikin (eli siis pieni miinus tähtösten perässä tästä syystä). Mutta DiCaprio kyllä saa minulta täydet pojot!

This movie was very impressive and I was almost completely sold. But there were couple of things from my (being a mother) point of view that annoyed me so, that I cannot give this movie five stars, even though I almost feel I should (so this is why there is this tiny minus at the end of those five beautiful stars). But DiCaprio gets all the points from me!

Jeff Bridges ja Colin Farrell nauhoittamassa erästä musiikkiosuutta elokuvaan Crazy Heart. Kuvanlaatu on kyllä aika huono, mutta kyllä tästä kuitenkin saa jonkinlaisen käsityksen miesten laulutaidoista.

Kyllä se vaan countrytyyliin laulaminen onnistuu irlantilaiseltakin...

Crazy Heart (2009)

Olen nähnyt viime päivinä niin monta mielenkiintoista elokuvaa, etten tiedä, mistä aloittaa. Mutta aloitettakoon nyt vaikka tästä.

I have seen so many interesting movies lately, that I don't even know, where to begin. But I will begin with this one.

Kävin sunnuntaina (juuri ennen Oscareita) katsomassa elokuvan Crazy Heart. Olin hiukan skeptinen leffaa kohtaan ja epäilin, että iäkkäästä country-muusikosta kertova elokuva saattaisi jopa kyllästyttää, ajatellen, että olen asunut yhdessä suurimmassa country-musiikin valloittamassa osavaltiossa jo kymmenen vuotta, enkä ole tänä aikana tuntenut suurtakaan vetoa tätä musiikin lajia kohtaan.

I went to see the movie Crazy Heart on Sunday (just before the Oscar gala). I was a little bit skeptic about this one though, it being a movie about an old country musician. I thought that this subject might actually bore me, me being a person, who has lived in one of the largest country music states for so long, never really falling for this type of music.

Mutta taas kerran sain huomata epäilykseni turhaksi. Tämä elokuva vei minut täysin mennessään. Vaikka leffa oli täynnä tuttua muusikon luomisen tuskaa, sitä valitettavaa alkoholin määrää ja satunnaista itsesäälissä rypemistä (kuulostaa hyvin pitkälti suomalaiselta elokuvan käsikirjoitukselta), antoi se minulle siitä huolimatta jotain uutta.

But once again I proved myself wrong. This movie took me for a full ride. Even though this is not at all a new subject with all the usual pain of creating something new, all that alcohol abuse and feeling sorry for oneself (this sounds a lot like a typical finnish movie screenplay), it still gave me something new.

Elokuva auttoi näkemään, kuinka vanha Bad Blaken kaltainen muusikkomieskin (Jeff Bridges) pystyy ja on oikeutettu rakastamaan itseään huomattavasti nuorempaa naista (Maggie Gyllenhaal), saaden osakseen myös kaivattua vastarakkautta. Elokuva auttoi myös näkemään, kuinka elämä usein heittelee meitä, eikä aina edes tarjoa sitä toivottua toista mahdollisuutta, mutta siitä huolimatta elämä jatkuu ja kaikella on lopulta tarkoituksensa.

Jostain syystä näin elokuvassa myös tiettyjä yhtymäkohtia Mickey Rourken tähdittämän elokuvan The Wrestler kanssa. Yksinäinen vanha mies, epäonnea rakkaudessa, mitättömät välit jälkeläisten kanssa, alamäet ja se ainainen rakkauden kaipuu.

This movie helped me to see, how an old musician like Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) can and is entitled to fall in love with a woman much younger than himself (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and is able and can feel to be loved in return. It also helped me to see, how our life often throws us around not always giving us those anticipated second chances. Even so our life goes on and has its meaning after all.

For some reason I felt that this movie and all the settings had something similar with the Mickey Rourke starred movie The Wrestler. Lonely old man, bad luck in love, non existing relationship with offspring, going downhill and all the longing for love.

Jeff Bridges sai roolistaan Oscarin, eikä suotta. Hän oli roolissaan puhutteleva, tuo raihnainen, väsynyt Bad Blake, joka tiesi itsekin, että elämä oli häntä jo viime vuosina kolhinut. Siitä huolimatta hän jaksoi yrittää ja välillä minulla oli tunne, että katsoin elokuvan sijaan musiikkipitoista dokumenttia tästä vanhasta miehestä. Sain myös huomata, ettei Jeff Bridges ole ainoastaan taitava näyttelijä, vaan hänellä on sen lisäksi myös äärimmäisen hyvä lauluääni!

Elokuvan musiikkipitoiset kohtaukset toimivat yllätyksekseni äärimmäisen hyvin ja suorastaan hämmästyin, kuinka jalkani polki leffasalin lattiaan biisejä kuunnellessani. Colin Farrell esiintyy myös muutamassa kohtauksessa ja täytyy sanoa, että tällä nuorella irkkukomistuksella on myös aivan järkyttävän upea lauluääni!!! Ja se kokonaisuus hiukan alaspäinsuunnatulla tummalla katseella, pitkillä hiuksilla, poninhännällä, ajamattomalla parralla ja korviksilla. Oi joi... ;-)

Ja voitteko kuvitella, tässä harkitsen jopa ostavani tämän elokuvan soundtrackin. Ei voi olla tosi! Enhän mä edes kuuntele countrya.

Jeff Bridges got an Oscar for this role, and for a good reason. He was appealing in his role. Being this already decrepit old, weary Bad Blake, who realized that his life had been a rough one lately. Still he continued going and at times I felt like I was watching a documentary of this old man rather than a movie. I also noticed that Jeff Bridges is not only a hell of a actor, he also has a beautiful voice!

For my suprise all the music scenes of this movie worked out fantastic and I was amazed how my feet were beating along the rhythm. Colin Farrell was also seen in a couple of scenes and I must say that this Irishman has also an incredible singing voice!!! And his overall appearance in this movie with the downward directed dark eyes, long dark hair in ponytail, the unshaved beard and earrings... Oh my... ;-)

And can you imagine this. I am also thinking about getting the soundtrack of this movie! Can't be true! I am not even a country music fan!

Kaikenkaikkiaan Crazy Heart on hyvin lämminhenkinen, tosin hiukan melankolinen elokuva, joka tuo esille vanhan muusikkomiehen tarinan. Tarinan, joka voisi hyvinkin olla totta. Suosittelen tätä elokuvaa kaikille realistisen draaman nälkäisille.

All in all Crazy Heart is this warm, yet a bit melancholic movie, which brings alive a story of an old musician. A story, which could easily be true. I recommend this film to all you people who are thirsty to see realistic drama movies.
